Philanthropy
Doing good is not something Dr. LoVecchio thinks about. It comes naturally to him. Growing up with modest means in the Bronx, he learned to earn his success in life, and giving back was a given. His father a chef and his mother a homemaker and factory worker, LoVecchio’s first language was Italian. He speaks it fluently, as well as Spanish.
Talk to him long enough, and the stories pour out. When his oldest daughter was around 5, he began volunteering for a local battered women’s shelter. He’d bring her along to pass out lollipops to the children while he provided primary care for their parents. He took on mission trips to places like Honduras and Guatemala. And on his own, he planned family vacations around his ability to provide education, supplies or medical care in Cuba, Turkey, Qatar, Belize and more. And all along, his daughters would model as the patient for demonstration.
“The basic stuff like we taught in Belize is so important such as wound care, basic stabilization after trauma and public health practices, etc.” Dr. LoVecchio said. “There are about a dozen principals that would save many lives that don’t involve any drugs. I want to remind people of the basics and the simple stuff.”
As we sit down to talk, his phone rings. A neighbor’s girlfriend has an abscess on her leg following a routine surgical procedure. He invites them over for him to take a look. Does he mind the regular requests to look at a picture of some wound, to weigh in on the color of a friend’s throat or to diagnose a virus over the phone (with little or no information)?
LoVecchio pauses. True to his pensive form, his legs are crossed, eyes squinted and his finger wags. He remains in this posture for a moment, squinting and weighing his next statement. “Have you ever read Dante’s Inferno?” he asks. “I must have read it nine times. I tried to read it in Italian, but I had to look up every other word.” This is typical. The thoughtful LoVecchio doesn’t answer a question without careful consideration. And don’t expect a straight answer. There is a moral in every response. “The worst of the worst in hell is reserved for those who are in a position to help another and choose not to.”
