ABOUT DR. FRANK LOVECCHIO
DO, MPH, ABMT, FACEP
Imagine a school bus accident and dozens of young children transported to the hospital in a dump truck. The truck driver was, after all, the first to happen upon the crash site in greater Izmir, Turkey. It was the early 1990s, and there was no such thing as a structured EMS system in the country. In fact, there was no such thing as an ER doc.
The field of emergency medicine was still in its relative infancy in America. So when Dr. LoVecchio, Chief Resident at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, was asked to help assist with the first emergency residency program in Izmir, Turkey – the first of its kind in that country – he strung together all of the vacation and holiday time he could to be a part of it. Dr. LoVecchio was no stranger to the teaching environment, but this was a unique opportunity to see the field he loves built from the ground up.
Dr. LoVecchio taught basic principles of emergency care to roughly 10 medical school graduates with the help of an English translator. “They were hungry for it,” he said. “And I came in with the emergency medicine philosophy.”
That philosophy is something that has driven most of Dr. LoVecchio’s career. “It’s truly incredible to realize the number of lives that could be saved today with very basic emergency skills,” Dr. LoVecchio said. “Things like stabilizing a patient’s neck after trauma or checking controlling bleeding or starting CPR – these are steps that professionals trained in emergency care know to do and should train the public. ”
With expertise in the areas of toxicology, addiction medicine, public health, and research as well as emergency medicine, LoVecchio has made it his life’s mission to improve patient outcomes both at home and across the globe.
